Gas Burner Installation & Certification Guide
⚠️ MANDATORY PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION REQUIRED
This page outlines the essential legal and safety requirements for installing your ARGHERI Gas Burner Kit in Australia. The installation of this appliance is NOT a DIY task.
1. Supply Only: Exclusions and Scope
The price you pay for your Argheri Oven and/or Modular Fire Gas Burner Kit is a supply-only price.
What's Included:
- Oven: Custom, high-thermal-mass masonry structure
- Gas Burner: Supplied as a separate, loose component
EXCLUDED COSTS: The following professional services are NOT included in the purchase price and must be quoted and paid for separately:
- Installation, assembly, and commissioning of the burner into the oven
- Running gas lines and connection to main supply
- Electrical supply installation (for E/T Series burners)
- Mandatory Type B Certification
- Compliance Certificate issuance
These services must be provided by a licensed gas contractor.
2. Type A vs. Type B Appliance: Understanding the Key Difference
In Australia, gas appliances are classified into two categories that determine the certification process:
Type A Appliances (Mass Produced)
Definition: Standardised, mass-produced appliances for residential and light commercial use
Examples: Residential gas stoves, standard BBQs, patio heaters
Certification: Pre-certified by bodies like the Australian Gas Association (AGA) with approval badges. Installation completed by a standard licensed Type A gas fitter who issues a certificate of compliance for the piping work.
Type B Appliances (Commercial/Industrial)
Definition: Non-standard, large commercial, or industrial appliances with gas consumption typically exceeding 10 MJ/h. This includes appliances that are custom-built or assembled in-situ.
Certification: Requires individual assessment and certification after installation to ensure the combined assembly meets AS 3814 standards: Industrial and commercial gas-fired appliances.
3. Why Your ARGHERI Oven Requires Type B Certification
ARGHERI ovens are not mass-produced appliances. Each oven is a custom build tailored specifically for the individual customer.
Because of this:
- The gas burner is supplied separately from the oven structure
- The burner must be installed in-situ (on-site) under the oven or bench
- The combined assembly (oven + burner + flue system) creates a unique installation
- All ARGHERI burners exceed the 10 MJ/h threshold for Type B classification
Therefore: The entire installation must be treated as a Type B Appliance installation and requires Type B Certification.
4. The Mandatory Certification Process
What is Type B Certification?
You must engage a licensed Type B Gas Certifier or authorised Type B Gas Fitter to oversee installation and certify the final appliance.
The Process:
Step 1: Technical Submission Before installation, the Certifier or Fitter reviews:
- Burner technical specifications
- Proposed installation design
- Compliance with AS 3814 standards
Step 2: Installation The licensed professional installs:
- Gas burner unit under the oven or bench
- Gas supply lines and connections
- Electrical connections (if required for E/T Series)
- Flue system integration
Step 3: Commissioning After installation, the Certifier conducts an on-site inspection testing:
- Burner operation and safety controls
- Flue integrity and ventilation
- Gas pressure and leak testing
- Compliance with AS 3814 standards
Step 4: Final Certification If compliant, the Certifier:
- Issues a Type B Certificate of Compliance
- Affixes a certification label to the appliance
- Submits documentation to the relevant state authority
⚠️ CRITICAL REQUIREMENT
YOU MUST NOT OPERATE THE GAS BURNER UNTIL THE CERTIFICATE IS ISSUED.
Failure to obtain proper certification will:
- Void your warranty
- Create serious safety risks
- Violate legal requirements
5. State-Based Governing Bodies (Technical Regulators)
While Type B Certifiers can operate across state borders, each state has its own primary gas safety regulatory body:
| State/Territory | Governing Body | Website |
|---|---|---|
| New South Wales (NSW) | NSW Fair Trading | fairtrading.nsw.gov.au |
| Victoria (VIC) | Energy Safe Victoria (ESV) | energysafe.vic.gov.au |
| Queensland (QLD) | Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ) | rshq.qld.gov.au |
| South Australia (SA) | Office of the Technical Regulator (OTR) | energymining.sa.gov.au |
| Western Australia (WA) | Building and Energy / DMIRS | demirs.wa.gov.au |
| Tasmania (TAS) | Consumer, Building and Occupational Services (CBOS) | cbos.tas.gov.au |
| Australian Capital Territory (ACT) | Access Canberra | accesscanberra.act.gov.au |
| Northern Territory (NT) | NT WorkSafe | worksafe.nt.gov.au |
Your Type B Certifier will handle the submission of compliance documentation to the appropriate authority in your state or territory.
6. Your Next Steps
Finding a Qualified Professional
Search for:
- Type B Gas Fitter
- Type B Gas Certifier
- Commercial Gas Fitter
- Combustion Engineer
Important: Not all standard gas fitters are authorised to work on Type B appliances. Verify their Type B certification before engaging their services.
Getting Quotes
Provide the fitter with:
- Burner model (M-Series or E/T-Series)
- Burner kW rating (14 kW or 34 kW)
- Oven model (Forzo 70/100/120/Pro)
- Installation location and gas supply type (LPG or Natural Gas)
Expected costs typically range from $900 to $2,500 AUD depending on:
- Location and accessibility
- Complexity of gas line installation
- Electrical requirements (E/T Series)
- Additional ventilation or flue modifications
Documentation to Retain
After installation, ensure you receive:
- Type B Certificate of Compliance – Your proof of legal, safe installation

Australian Standards Compliance
All installations must comply with:
- AS 3814 – Industrial and commercial gas-fired appliances
- AS 5601 – Gas installations
- AS 1668 – Mechanical ventilation and air-conditioning
Flue Requirements
A properly installed and certified flue system is mandatory to:
- Safely vent exhaust gases
- Ensure adequate ventilation
